Description du contenu de l'enseignement

Objective of the EU   A broad approach to the study of sedimentology is taken, providing the student a step-by-step from the generation of sediments through weathering and erosion, through transport, deposition, and finally diageneses. The course focuses on applying this knowledge to the comprehension of palaeoenvironments and sub-environments, dominantly based on real case-studies from research performed in Europe, North America, South America, Africa and Asia. The discipline is divided into theory and practical. The first is broadly subdivided into siliciclastics, carbonates, evaporites, volcaniclastics, and phosphates. The dominant subject is siliciclastic deposits, where all characteristics of the grains are dissected, providing applied meaning for their individual characteristics, framework and fabric.   Discipline taught in English

Compétences à acquérir

The students should be able to recognise the different major groups of sedimentary rocks, and to describe in detail siliciclastic deposits (grain size, sedimentary structures, bioturbation/trace fossils, bed geometries, etc...), which are tools for interpreting palaeoenvironment.
